new rising from the old :: hearst tower

norman foster's new building is the latest addition to nyc's skyline..

I saw this building a while ago when it was still under construction (and looking like a giant mess) and it looked almost ridiculously too large and grandiose for its base..

interesting that the original building (you can sort of see it at the foot of this new structure) built in 1928, was meant to have a tower on top of it, but the Depression put a kink into that plan..might have been a blessing in disguise..
